Breaking Bread

Yesterday, I had the privilege to volunteer with Breaking Bread, a ministry that takes place every Wednesday night for the homeless and hungry in Chicago. We served a home-cooked meal in a restaurant-style dining atmosphere. The guests were served each course at their table, on real plates and silverware. Also, part of the dining area is sectioned off for a Bible study if guests desired to read with somebody or needed prayer. The great thing about Breaking Bread is that they strive to meet other physical needs, as well as spiritual and emotions needs. In addition to providing food, we set up tables and tables of donated clothes so the people could take what they needed. There was also counseling services and a nurse practitioner on site to provide basic medical attention and HIV tests.

This night was filled with great hospitality and encouragement for folks facing many challenges and disappointments in their daily lives. I am honored to be a part of Breaking Bread and hope to continue to volunteer on Wednesday nights.
